COUGARS BEGIN FINAL HOMESTAND AGAINST BULLDOGS, BEAVERS: The Washington State baseball team returns home this week after four games on the road with a one-game showdown with Gonzaga and a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series with Oregon State.

The Cougars play host to Gonzaga Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Bailey-Brayton Field. Their three-game set with the Beavers begins Friday at 6 p.m.

Last week, WSU won three of four games. The Cougars defeated Lewis-Clark State 7-2 Tuesday and took two of three from conference foe UCLA to run their record to 17-24 for the season and 4-11 in conference action.

Freshman shortstop Derek Bruce hit for the cycle in the LCSC win. Bruce, playing in front of his hometown at Lewiston's Harris Field, boosted his average to .266 on the season and hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season in the effort.

Several other hitters had solid performances last week. Junior second baseman Robert Stahlke was 6-for-11 in the series against UCLA and had nine RBI. Stahlke started in place of senior Bookie Gates, who was limited to pinch-hitting duties because of a hamstring injury. Gates is probable for this week.

Junior third baseman Jeff LaRue was 7-for-14 and is now hitting a team-leading .373. Sophomore left fielder Justin Hart was 6-for-13 against the Bruins and is now hitting .368 for the season. Sophomore right fielder Collin Henderson was 5-for-12 and is now hitting .318 for the year.

Gonzaga enters Wednesday night's contest at 23-21 overall, going 0-4 last week. Oregon State is 27-15 overall and 6-6 in Pac-10 play. The Beavers went 3-1 last week, defeating Portland and Stanford twice.
