ST. GEORGE, Utah--- The battle between Washington State and Brigham Young for the final spot at the NCAA West Regional may come down to their head-to-head battle in the final two rounds of the Utah Dixie Classic.
Washington State leads BYU by .08 points in the Golfweek / Sagarin poll for the 13th and final spot at the NCAA West Regional in Tempe, Ariz. BYU's Cougars struck a huge blow Monday by jumping out to an 11-stroke lead. WSU's Cougars, which shot a first round 319, have 36 holes Tuesday to make up ground.
Shanelle Roberts (Tacoma, Wash.) led WSU with a first round 76 and is currently tied for 25th. Junior Jennifer Dodd (Portland, Ore.) and freshman Donna Bell carded identical 80s and are locked with 12 others at 64th. Jenny Ballou (Portland, Ore.) and Tasha Browner (Tarzana, Calif.) are in a similar logjam. Both shot 81 on the first 18 and are tied with 11 other players in 78th.
Individual leader Maria Boden of Oklahoma State fired a five-under par 67 and helped her Cowgirls to a six-stroke lead in the team standings.
Play at the par-72 Sunbrook Golf Course Tuesday begins at 8:00 am.
