The Cougars (9-3-1, 1-0-1 Pac-10), ranked 24th-nationally by Soccer Times, scored their goals 4:06 apart to take a 2-0 lead at intermission.
"The first half performance was one of our most complete and one of our best of the season," WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. "To go up two goals against a quality Pac-10 opponent on the road is not easy and I am very proud of our team."
In the 33rd minute, Carly Dobratz connected on a pass to Dallstream and the latter went around Arizona State (7-4-2, 0-3-0 Pac-10) goalkeeper Alyssa Gillmore to find the open net for her 12th goal of the season.
The Cougars went up 2-0 when Emma Stolz fed a pass to Johnston who dribbled past two defenders and fired a shot under the crossbar into the center of the net.
"I'm so delighted for Melanie," Potter said. "She has worked so hard and to be able to come home to Arizona and score her first goal in front of her friends and family is a great moment for her."
Bianca Doller pulled the Sun Devils, ranked 24th-nationally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, within 2-1 with a goal in the 76th minute. Cougar goalkeeper Meghan Berlingo made a key save in the 89th minute to preserve the victory.
