CORVALLIS, Ore. -- A trio of Oregon State Beavers combined for 49 kills to lead their volleyball team to a 30-13, 31-33, 30-20, 30-18 win over Washington State Friday night at Gill Coliseum at Corvallis, Ore.
OSU's Karah Rhoades had a match-high 17 kills and was joined by Kristin Murray and Brittany Cahoon with 16 kills each. Setter Desma Stovall added 55 assists and 14 digs. Cahoon was the match blocks leader with eight.
OSU evened its overall record to 7-7 and is now 3-5 in Pac-10 action. WSU drops to 8-13 overall, 1-7 in conference play.
The Cougars were led by freshman Brittany Johnson's 15 kills. Jen Barcus was the only other Coug with double-digit kills at 11. Gwen Davis had 35 assists. Te'Ara Epps led WSU with five blocks while Jalen Pendon added 21 digs. WSU did not have a service ace while allowing nine aces by OSU.
In WSU's win in the second game, the Cougars went out to a 16-5 lead only to have the Beavs come back to tie up the game at 28-all. WSU's Kelly Rosin landed a kill on a tip to put the Cougs at game point but Cahoon countered with a kill to knot the game at 29 points. Rhoades served an ace for OSU but on the Beavers game point, Rosin's kill tied the game at 30. Johnson and Epps combined on a block to put WSU ahead 31-30. Cahoon's block tied the game for the fourth time. The Cougars answered with a kill from Johnson and a block by Barcus and Natalia Owens to take the second game 33-31.
Washington State travels to Eugene for a match against Oregon (10-9, 0-8) Saturday, Oct. 22.
