TUCSON, Ariz. - Three Minnesota pitchers combined for a six-hit shutout and the Golden Gophers defeated Washington State 2-0 in the Dairy Queen Classic at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium, Saturday.

Phil Isakkson (1-0) logged six and one-third innings for the victory. Billy Soule and Scott Matyas each recorded four outs for Minnesota (4-4) with Matyas earning his third save.

"We had our opportunities offensively and just didn't get the big hit when we needed it," Washington State Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "James Wise gave us a chance to win and that's all we can ask from our pitchers."

The Cougars (5-2), who had their four-game winning streak snapped, had at least one baserunnner in every inning, including two in the second, fifth and seventh.

Wise (2-1) retired the first 10 batters he faced before Minnesota picked up a run in the fourth on a single, balk, wild pitch and single. The Golden Gophers added a run in the sixth on a single, sacrifice bunt, error and single.

Washington State's best threat came in the sixth when Derek Jones reached on a two-base error to open the inning. However, he was stranded at third, one of 10 men left on base by the Cougars.

The Cougars conclude the Dairy Queen Classic against South Alabama, Sunday at 8:30 a.m. The game can be heard on KQQQ NewsTalk 1150 AM.
