This Week: The Washington State Swim team will host the Debbie Pipher Memorial Invitational this weekend...the event will begin Friday Oct. 22 at 5 p.m., and will resume Saturday at noon....the Cougars will split into a Crimson Team and a Gray Team, while Idaho will field a Gold Team and a Black Team....the event is named after Debbie Pipher, who was the head swim coach for Washington State from 1977-97, led the Cougars to a 85-62-1 record during her tenure and lost her battle with breast cancer in January 2007...as part of WSU's Wear Pink Weekend, the first 100 fans at Gibb Pool will receive a free T-shirt in support of breast cancer awareness.
Cougar Catch-Up: In the first weekend of competition, the Cougars defeated Idaho and Seattle in Moscow, Idaho Oct. 8...Rugile Mileisyte and Talor Whitaker each won two events and led the Cougars in points...the Cougar squad is coming off a strong performance at the TYR Pacific Invitational where it finished second behind Brigham Young...Mileisyte won four events while Whitaker was added to WSU's all-time top-10 list for her performance in the 200 butterfly.
WSU Last Season: The Cougars went 2-4 last season with wins against Northern Arizona and Seattle...the team finished the season with 11 WSU all-time top-10 performances and set two school records...senior Michaela Ahlin represented the Cougars at the NCAA Championships for the second-consecutive year.
2010-11 Outlook: The squad returns 14 letter winners including seniors Jennifer Dean, Rugile Mileisyte and Talor Whitaker...the trio of senior leaders hold three individual school records, contributed to five relay records and 13 spots on the Cougars' all-time top-10 lists...the team also welcomes nine newcomers this season.
Coaching Staff: Head coach Erica Quam is in her ninth season at WSU...under Quam the Cougars have set 19 school records and earned 92 different spots on school's all-time top 10 lists...she is joined by assistant coach Lindsay Henahan and student assistant coach Jesse Grow...Henahan is in her third season while Grow is in his second season.
