MALIBU, Calif. - Matt Bywater struck out a dozen in eight innings to lead No. 17 Pepperdine past Washington State 3-1 in the opener of a two-game nonconference series at Eddy D. Field Stadium, Tuesday.
Bywater improved to 2-0 for the Waves (12-5) and Nick Gaudi worked a perfect ninth with a pair of strikeouts for his fourth save. Freshman Anthony Drobnick (0-1) took the loss in relief for Washington State (5-10).
"You have to tip your cap to Matt Bywater," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "On our side, it was good to get Ross Humes back into game action and we look forward to getting him more work as the season progresses."
Pepperdine picked up two runs, one earned, in the bottom of the fifth, off Drobnick with a double, hit batter, single and error. Tyler Brubaker capped the scoring with a homer leading off the seventh inning against redshirt-freshman David Stilley.
The series concludes Wednesday with game time scheduled for noon.
Senior Ross Humes made his season debut with a controlled start...Humes gave up one hit, walked two and struck out one in two and two-thirds innings.
