LOS ANGELES - Washington State women's soccer fell to Duke 4-0 in its final match in the USC Futbol Classic, Sunday.

Going head-to-head with the No. 4 ranked Blue Devils, the Cougars were unable to get on the board in a grueling match fought out on McAlister Field. Duke took the lead in the 23rd minute when Kim DeCesare beat Washington State goalkeeper, redshirt sophomore Gurveen Clair, one-on-one.

Duke went on to once more before the half and twice more after the intermission. Callie Simpkins accounted for two of the Blue Devils' goals.

Clair, who before the USC Futbol Classic had not let in a goal this season, allowed three goals and recorded one save in almost 75 minutes of play. Senior Ariana Byrd relieved Clair for the final 15 minutes in which she let in a goal and tallied two saves.

The Cougars came close to converting a number of times; including the first opportunity which came when junior Rachael Doyle took a header off of a corner kick by senior Brandi Vega that was saved by Blue Devil goalkeeper Tara Campbell. Washington State sophomores Jocelyn Jeffers and Nicole Setterlund and freshman Kourtney Guetlein all made shots that were interrupted by Campbell's efforts.

Washington State was outshot 16-6 and recorded four corner kicks to Duke's five.

"Today we lost to a good team that was better than us on the day," commented Cougar Head Coach Keidane McAlpine. "We didn't match their intensity and they made us pay for it."
