Final Stats

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State jumped to an early lead and never let Washington State get in the game while handing the Cougars a 9-1 non-conference baseball loss Friday at Goss Stadium.

Collin Henderson and Wes Falkenborg each had two hits for the Cougars (10-8), while starter Eddie Bonine (3-3) took the loss. Nick Kenyon finished up in relief for Washington State.

Chris Biles paced the Beavers (11-7) with four hits, including a home run and a double, while Ben Rowe (4-1) and Mike Edstrom scattered eight hits, struck out eight and walked just one for Oregon State.

"This is the third outing Eddie has been inconsistent," WSU head coach Tim Mooney observed. "We need to get him back on track."

The host Beavers picked up six runs in the second, third and fourth innings, added three more in the sixth and seventh and never looked back.

WSU's only run came in the fifth when Collin Henderson collected his first home run of the season, a one-out solo blast to left field.

The Cougars stranded 10 runners, but only three reached third base.

"We never did get untracked," Mooney said. "We couldn't sustain anything offensively. We had some opportunities to score, but couldn't turn the base runners into runs."

One of WSU's best chances to score came in the seventh when Baeder and Henderson singled to open the inning off Ekstrom, who had just taken over for Rowe. Evan Hecker's groundout to first advanced the runners one base each, but the Beaver relief pitcher, a first-year freshman, then struck out Robert Stahlke and Bookie Gates to end the inning.

The visitors also left two runners stranded in the fourth when Gates and Falkenborg hit back to back singles to open the inning. However, the next three WSU batters all flew out, Derek Bruce, Jeff LaRue and Steve Mortimer.

In the sixth WSU had Falkenborg at second and LaRue at first with two outs, but Mortimer struck out to end the threat.

The two teams continue their three-game series with a 1:00 p.m. game Saturday and a noon contest Sunday. Monday WSU will be at the University of Portland.
