PULLMAN, Wash. -- Portland State leadoff batter Rusty Keith drove home five runs with a single, double and home run as the Vikings held off Washington State to pick up a 16-9 win Friday in a Pacific-10 Conference North baseball game at Bailey Field.

Starter Scott Oyler (3-5) picked up the win for PSU (14-32 overall, 2-9 in Pac-10 play), striking out nine and allowing just five hits through six and two-thirds innings. Adam Flohr and Brannon Cedergreen followed Oyler to the mound in the seventh and ninth innings, respectively.

Todd Meldahl (4-6) took the loss for the Cougars (24-22, 11-10), allowing 10 hits and 10 runs, all earned, before giving way to Les McTavish in the seventh. Meldahl also struck out 10. Dave Wheeler finished up on the mound for WSU.

Nine home runs flew out of the WSU park, including six by the Vikings and three from WSU hitters. Beau Boudreau picked up his third and fourth home runs of the year for PSU, while WSU's Casey Kelley knocked his school record 23rd home run of the year over the left centerfield fence to lead off the fourth inning. With three games remaining in the weekend series, Kelley is now tied with current New York Met John Olerud, who clubbed 23 home runs in 1988.

Portland State scored single runs in the firt and second innings, tallied five times in the fifth, added three more runs in the seventh, then polished off the Cougars with six runs in the ninth.

Keith gave PSU the early lead when he hit his fifth home run of the year to lead off the game. In the fifth he broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run single, then followed that up in the ninth with a two-run double.

Boudreau put the Vikings ahead 2-0 in the second inning with his first home run of the afternoon, then in the ninth hit another solo shot.

David Ferres belted a three-run home run in PSU's five-run fifth, while Rudy Zarfas hit his second home run of the season in the seventh when PSU scored three times. Rich Southall and Neal Andrade had run scoring singles in the seventh as the Vikings took a 10-4 lead.

PSU then put the game out of reach with a six-run ninth inning that produced a 16-8 lead. Andrade's sixth home run of the year accounted for three of the runs, while Boudreau and Keith did the rest of the damage.

WSU answered the visitor's early scoring with Greg Mitchell's 15th home run of the year, a solo shot in the second, and then Kelley's home run in the fourth. WSU continued its scoring with Steve Gleason's sacrifice fly in the fifth and Jason Grove's run-scoring single in the sixth as the Cougs cut PSU's lead to 7-4.

After the Vikings put three runs on the board in the seventh, WSU answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, cutting PSU's lead to 10-8. Shawn Stevenson singled home WSU's first run of the inning and Greg Mitchell three batters later singled home two more runs. Flohr then took over for Oyler and Justin Mentink greeted his two-out offering for a run-scoring double, but the Viking relief pitcher then struck out pinch hitter Jeff Schurer to end WSU's rally.

WSU's final tally came in the bottom of the ninth on Stevenson's home run to right field.

The two teams continue their series Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader, then conclude action Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. single game.
