CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The host Beavers took a three-game sweep of the Washington State Cougars Friday night at Gill Coliseum on the Oregon State campus. The 15-11, 17-15, 15-7 win was Oregon State's first Pac-10 win this season and the first time they have beaten WSU in 10 matches.
WSU moves to 7-4 overall, 2-2 in conference play while Oregon State is now 7-4 overall, 1-2 in the Pac-10.
The first game saw the Cougars and Beavers stay evenly matched through the first nine points but with WSU hitting a mere .122 and OSU tagging .395 and out-blocking the Cougs five to one, Oregon State won 15-11. Freshman Adrian Hankoff was subbed in for senior Joy Sperry after the sole Cougar senior nailed only one kill in 11 attacks.
Up 11-7 in the second game, WSU began to unravel and committed numerous defensive errors. After leading OSU with six kills in the first game, Coeur d'Alene's Angie Shirley tagged another six in the second, allowing the Beavers to tied it up at 13. Cougars went ahead 14-13 but a Sarah Bjeldanes kill denied the WSU win and OSU took the lead 15-14. A hitting error by Missy Blackshire put OSU up 16-15 and kills by Bjeldanes and Katrina Nelson gave the home-court Beavers a 17-15 win.
Oregon State ran off seven consecutive points to take a commanding 12-4 lead before WSU could get a sideout. In spite of stopping the Beavers at game point nine times, WSU managed only three more points and the host team claimed the third game 15-7 and a match sweep.
Oregon State was led by the 15 kills and eight blocks of Shirley as the Beavs out-blocked the Cougars 13 to 4. WSU was led by freshman LaToya Harris with 17 kills while Blackshire had 12 digs. The two Cougar veterans, Sperry and Blackshire, both hit negative for the match.
The Cougars return to their home court at Beasley Coliseum next week to take on USC Thursday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. and UCLA Friday, Oct. 1, at 7:30 p.m.
