COUGARS RETURN TO THE ROAD WITH FOUR-GAME SET AGAINST LCSC, UCLA: Washington State heads to Lewiston Tuesday to take on NAIA No. 8 Lewis-Clark State for a one-game engagement at 6:30 p.m. at Harris Field. The Cougars will return to Pac-10 action Friday when they visit UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium for a three-game set beginning at 6 p.m.

WSU enters the week at 14-23 overall and 2-10 in the Pac-10. LCSC brings a 24-10 record into this week. The Bruins are 18-23 overall and 4-5 in the Pac-10.

Last week, WSU took on conference leader USC in a three-game series at Bailey-Brayton Field. The Trojans swept the Cougars behind hot hitting. WSU, however, was just as explosive offensively.

Shortstop Derek Bruce broke out of a slump by going 4-for-7 to raise his average to .252. Designated hitter Wes Falkenborg also had a big series, going 5-for-11 at the plate and drove in five runs.

For the season, seven of the Cougars starters are batting over .300, led by left fielder Justin Hart's .368 average. Third baseman Jeff LaRue is right behind Hart with a .367 average.

Second baseman Bookie Gates, who missed Sunday's series finale with a pulled hamstring, is probable for this week. Gates is currently hitting .362 with a team-leading 29 RBI.

The pitching rotation will change this week. WSU will likely start junior right-hander Brandon Hundt (4-4, 5.59 ERA) against LCSC. Junior RHP Eddie Bonine (6-5, 5.81), Hundt (4-4, 5.59) and freshman RHP Bryce Chamberlin (0-0, 9.15) will take the mound against the Bruins. Junior left-hander Garrett Alwert (2-3, 7.39) has a dead arm and is not likely to pitch this week.
