BERKELEY, Calif. -- Xavier Nady belted two home runs and drove home four runs to lead the California Bears past the visiting Washington State Cougars Saturday in the first game of a three-game weekend series at Evans Diamond.

Nady's three-run home run to left field in the sixth put California (9-11-1) ahead for good and made a winner of Jason Dennis (2-1), the second Bear pitcher who threw four innings of one hit, no run ball.

WSU (7-8) starter Wade Parrish (3-1) suffered his first setback of the season before leaving the game with two out in the sixth inning. Parrish allowed 10 of California's 13 hits and nine runs, seven of them earned. He struck out two and walked two.

The Cougars took an early lead and twice led by three runs, but could not hold of the Bears. Greg Mitchell and Casey Kelley between them had five of WSU's six hits. Each had a home run, as did shortstop Shawn Stevenson.

Kelley's home run in the first inning scored Boyd Robertson, who had walked with two outs. In the second inning the Cougars took a 3-0 lead when Mitchell homered to centerfield leading off the inning.

California countered with two runs in the bottom of the second on Brian Oliver's bases loaded single, then tied the game in the third on Jason Hill's two out home run.

The Cougars then staked Parrish to a 6-3 lead in the fourth, thanks to Stevenson's three-run homer that scored Mitchell and Jason Grove. Over the final five innings, the Cougars mustered just two hits, Kelley's single in the fifth and a double by Mitchell in the eighth.

Ryan Drese started on the mound for California and threw the first five innings. He allowed all by one of WSU's hits and all six runs while striking out five and walking three. Dennis struck out two and did not issue a walk in his four-inning stint.

Sunday the two teams play the second of the three games, with the first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. Monday's single game will begin at 2:00 p.m.
