PULLMAN-- The Washington State University women's swim team faced an early 10-point deficit, but quickly rebounded to take a 113-90 win over Pac-10 rival Oregon State Saturday.

The Cougars extended their Gibb Pool win streak to nine, where they have not lost since Feb. 5, 2000, ironically, to Oregon State.

The competition Saturday was much closer than WSU's 159-103 victory over Oregon State Friday night, as the meet could have gone either way until the final event. However, in the 400 freestyle relay, Cougar teams grabbed the top two spots, securing victory in the meet. Rebecca Cohen, Jadine Louw, Sasha Taylor and Melissa Hubley swam on WSU's winning team.

"Today was all about racing," WSU head coach Rocco Aceto said. "Trying to swim fast during the second day of competition is always difficult, but we had some good performances, such as Lindsay Henahan, who played a big part in helping us win these two meets."

Henahan, a junior from Rochester, N.Y., proved to be a star of the meet for WSU, winning two events today. With sophomore Taryn Ternent, the Washington State school-record holder for the 50 and 100 freestyle events, out due to illness, Henahan provided a spark for her team, sweeping the two events both Friday and Saturday.

"I'm really excited, being able to win these events for the team," Henahan said. "I went into today trying to focus on racing, technique, and just getting my hand to the wall first."

WSU's Andree-Anne LeRoy won two individual events for the second consecutive day. The sophomore from Nanaimo, British Columbia claimed victory in the 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke Saturday, after winning the 100 backstroke and 400 individual medley Friday night.

Cougar junior Rebecca Cohen, who hails from Portland, Ore. and has trained with many athletes on the Oregon State team, also played a significant role in the WSU victory. In addition to swimming on the winning 400 free relay, Cohen mirrored her strong Friday night performance, again winning the 200 freestyle and placing second in the 500 freestyle.

"I trained with several of the Oregon State swimmers this summer," Cohen said. "We are good pals before and after the competition, but during the race, it's serious. I think my performance this week was solid, and it is a good way to evaluate where I am so I'll be able to swim faster at Pac-10's."

Melissa Hubley added another Cougar win Saturday in the 200 butterfly. The junior from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia won a total of three individual events and two relays during the two days of competition.

With the win, Washington State moves to 8-3 this season extending its win streak over the Beavers to four, while OSU falls to 7-4.

"This win makes us proud and excited, and those two things will definitely help our training and focus," Aceto said.

WSU now focuses on preparing for the Pac-10 Conference Championships, which run Feb. 28-Mar. 2 at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, Calif.
