LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Washington State baseball team did not get a runner past second base until the ninth inning Sunday afternoon in a 7-0 loss to the USC Trojans at Dedeaux Field. The loss drops the Cougars to a record of 15-34 (6-14 in Pac-10) while the Trojans run their record to 35-16 (15-5).
USC pitcher Rik Currier registered his first complete-game shutout of the season as he allowed only five hits but struck out 12 Cougars and walked one batter. In the seventh inning, Currier struck out Justin Williams to become USC's and the Pac-10's all-time career strikeout leader with 421, passing former USC pitcher Seth Etherton.
Cougar starter Garret Alwert didn't fare as well as Currier, but the sophomore from Puyallup, Wash., pitched solid baseball as he surrendered six runs, but only four earned, on nine hits while striking out two in seven innings' work. The Trojans scored two unearned runs in the first inning but struggled against Alwert until the fourth when USC right fielder Josh Self tripled-in Bill Peavey to push the lead to three runs.
Southern California manufactured two runs in the fifth and put up their sixth run of the game with a solo home run off the bat of Brian Barre in the seventh inning. The Trojans built a seven-run advantage in the eighth off WSU reliever Nick Kenyon with a sacrifice fly to finalize their scoring for the day.
WSU first baseman Stefan Bailie finished the game with two hits to lead all Cougar hitters, and initiated a scoring threat in the ninth by advancing Bookie Gates to third with a single to center field after Gates reached on an error with one out in the inning. Bailie stole second to put two runners in scoring position, but Currier struck out Alwert and Williams to end the ballgame.
The final game of the series will be Monday, May 14, at Dedeaux Field with game time scheduled for 1 p.m.
