EUGENE, Ore. - Freshmen guards Jazmine Perkins and April Cook each scored 17 points, leading the Washington State women's basketball team to a 58-45 victory over Oregon, the team's first victory at McArthur Court in nearly eight years. The Cougars improved to 10-13 on the season and 3-9 in the Pacific-10 Conference, while the Ducks dropped to 8-15 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
The Cougars ended an eight-game road losing streak to the Ducks, with their last win coming Feb. 15, 2001. The victory is only the second in the last 16 years for the Cougars.
"Our mission was to come down here and play good defense," WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. "For our team to come down here and make the kind of adjustments they did to get a win the second time around is a testament to them. This is a tough place to get a win and I am really proud of them."
The first half was back and forth with four lead changes, five ties and neither team holding more than a five-point lead. Though freshman Perkins scored 13 first-half points, the Cougars trailed 27-24 at halftime.
WSU reclaimed the lead at 28-27 in the midst of a 7-0 run to begin the second stanza after holding the Ducks scoreless for the first four minutes. The Ducks were able to regain the lead once more, but it was all Cougars from that point on. WSU built as much as a 15-point lead in the second half, coming back to win for only the fourth time this season after trailing at halftime.
Perkins and senior forward/center Heather Molzen each pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Cougars, and Perkins also recorded a game-high four assists.
The win was the first conference road victory of the season and gives the Cougars double-digit victories for the first time since 2000-01 (11).
WSU will play Oregon State Saturday at Gill Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
