TUCSON, Ariz. - Washington State All-American golfer Anastasia Kostina outshined the Arizona sun, Monday, as she fired her way into the top spot after completing the first round of the Pacific-10 Championship, held at the par-72, 6,459 yard Oro Valley Country Club.
Kostina, the sole senior Cougar, fired a 2-under 70 during the opening round of the tournament, tying her in a knot with Arizona State's Azahara Munoz, who is currently ranked No. 6 by Golfweek. Also making an impact on the course is freshman Amy Eneroth, who shot a 74 (+2) and sits in a tie for 17th, while teammate Jessica Black fired an opening round score 75 (+3) to finish the day knotted in a tie for 22nd.
The Cougars (No. 42/GolfWeek) finished the first round in sixth after shooting a single round score of 300 (+12), marking their third lowest single round team score of the spring season, and third lowest at the Pac-10 Championship. The Cougars currently trail fifth place Stanford (No. 21/GolfWeek), fourth place California (No. 12/GolfWeek) by only four strokes, trail third place Southern California (No. 6/GolfWeek) by only seven strokes, and sit nine strokes behind second place UCLA (No. 2/Golfweek). Arizona State (No. 3/GolfWeek) leads the tournament with a total of 287 (-1).
Washington State holds a one-stroke lead over seventh place Arizona (No. 19/GolfWeek), a seven-stroke lead over eighth place Oregon State (No. 49/GolfWeek), and an eight-stroke lead over Washington (No. 27/GolfWeek). Oregon rounds out the field in the 10th position, sitting 27-strokes out of the lead.
