Final Stats

TEMPE, Ariz. - Eric Sogard and Andrew Romine each drove in three runs to lead No. 12 Arizona State to a 16-6 victory over Washington State in the Pacific-10 Conference series finale Sunday afternoon at Packard Stadium.

Unlike the first two games where the Sun Devils (29-10, 10-2) jumped out to early leads, it was the Cougars (16-17, 1-8)scoring first as Greg Lagreid hit his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot in the fourth for the 1-0 lead. The home run tied teammate Jeff Miller for the team lead, though that would be short lived.

The Sun Devils took charge in the bottom of the inning by putting up five runs, the big hit coming from Matt Spencer's two-run double. ASU extended the lead in the fifth on a Brett Wallace RBI single before the Cougars struck in the sixth, posting two runs to make it a 6-3 lead. Following a Jared Prince double and Miller single to put runners at the corners, Paul Gran lined a double to left-center, bring home both runners.

Arizona State scored three more runs in the sixth and six in the seventh to put the game out of reach. WSU did put up three more in the eighth as Jim Murphy led off with a walk, advanced to second on a Prince single, then he and Prince both scored on Miller's three-run shot to left. It was his sixth home run of the season, regaining sole possession of the team lead from Lagreid.

WSU had 11 hits on the day as Prince led the way with three hits while Miller and Gran each had two. The cougars used six pitchers on the afternoon with starter Nick Ison suffering the loss.

The Sun Devils collected 17 hits, three by Rocky Laguna, to go with three runs scored, while Sogard scored three times to go with his two hits and three RBIs. Starter Brian Flores improved to 7-1 as he worked into the eighth inning, allowing six runs on nine hits.

The Cougars return to the diamond Tuesday evening when they travel to Spokane to face Gonzaga. The game, which had been scheduled for a 3 p.m. start, has been pushed back to a 6:30 start following the installation of light at the Patterson Baseball Complex.
