Sept. 3, 1999
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State and San Jose State were the big winners Friday in the first day of the Les Schwab Cougar Challenge Volleyball Tournament held at Beasley Coliseum.
Both the host Cougars and the San Jose State Spartans won two matches with WSU defeating Creighton and Boise State in 3-0 sweeps and SJSU beating Boise State 3-1 and Gonzaga 3-0.
In other first day action, Creighton defeated Gonzaga 3-0.
WSU defeated Creighton 15-6, 15-7, 15-9 in its debut match of the 1999 season. Led by 16 kills from both Joy Sperry and Missy Blackshire, the young Cougars dominated the match. Sperry (Wallace, Idaho), the lone senior on the squad, hit .517 and had 29 digs - just three short of tying the school record of 32 set by Shannon Wyckoff in 1995 at South Florida. Newcomers added both offensively and defensively to the Cougar cause. Holly Harris (Sandy, Utah) had eight kills and four blocks while LaToya Harris (Portland, Ore.)contributed seven kills, three service aces and four blocks. Melissa Wright (freshman, Muncie, Ind.) had 34 assists. Creighton's Melissa Walsh had 12 kills while Lisa Meekins added 10 digs. The Cougs out-blocked the BlueJays 11 to two.
In the nightcap, the Cougs again used a lineup that had one senior, one sophomore and four freshmen to down Boise State 15-7, 15-8, but Boise State rallied to a 14-11 margin in the third before WSU Coach Cindy Fredrick made a daring move of subbing in freshman Chelsie Schafer for LaToya Harris.
Schafer, from Saskatoon, Canada, arrived on the WSU campus at 5 a.m. this morning after a 15-hour drive from her hometown where she has been playing with the Canadian Junior National Team in the World Junior Championships. In spite of never practicing with the Cougars and only watching them play in one match earlier in the afternoon, Schafer added four inches of height at the net and tagged two kills. WSU went on to win the game 16-14 and the match 3-0.
Sperry had 16 kills, 11 digs, three service aces and four blocks while Holly Harris nailed 10 kills for WSU. Boise State's Becky Meek and Tara Brinkerhoff each had nine kills. WSU out-blocked the Broncos 11 to four.
Saturday's action begins at 10 a.m. with Boise State meeting Creighton, followed at noon with the WSU-Gonzaga match. San Jose State plays Creighton at 2 p.m., Gonzaga meets Boise State at 4:30 p.m., and the predicted tournament championship between Washington State and San Jose State is set for 7 p.m. All matches are at Beasley Coliseum.
