PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State second baseman Boyd Robertson was selected to the 1998 GTE Academic All-District VIII squad.
Robertson (Richland, Wash.) owns the highest grade point average on the squad of 10 student-athletes. He has a 3.84 GPA as a zoology/pre-med major. Robertson is the first Cougar baseball player to earn GTE honors since pitcher Kurt Waananen in 1985.
Overall the Cougar junior started 32 of 40 games and compiled a .276 batting average. In Pacific-10 North play Robertson was WSU's third leading hitter with a .323 average.
Three other Pac-10 Conference ballplayers joined Robertson on the All-District VIII team, including Oregon State catcher Ben Bertrand (3.46 GPA, science) and the Arizona duo of first baseman Ken Corley (3.557 GPA, political science) and outfielder Jason Hendricks (3.28 GPA, finance).
UNLV pitcher Mike Zipser (Las Vegas, Nevada) was the top vote-getter on the District VIII squad. Zipser, a sports injury management major, has a 3.58 GPA.
The district selections will be placed on the national ballot and the 1998 GTE Academic All-America baseball team will be announced Tuesday, June 2. The GTE Academic All-America teams are selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
