CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's Brian Barden hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning off Cougar starter Garrett Alwert to give the Beavers an 8-7 win over WSU Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The loss marked the first time this season the Cougars have been swept in Pac-10 play, as WSU drops to 14-27 overall (5-10 in Pac-10) while Oregon State improved to 25-16 (8-7).
Barden's game-winner came after the Beavers loaded the bases with two outs, but all four runs were unearned as Oregon State took advantage of Bookie Gates' error that allowed Eric Stark and Seth Pietsch reach first and third, respectively. Oregon State collected an infield single that did not score Pietsch, but loaded the bases and Barden cleared the sacks to give OSU the win.
After getting behind 4-0 after the second inning, WSU answered the challenge by posting three runs in the third and another score in the fifth. Catcher Jon Baeder drove in Justin Williams for the Cougars' first run of the ballgame and Evan Hecker singled-in Tanner Kahler to slice Oregon State's lead in half at 4-2. Baeder came around to score when Stefan Bailie grounded into a double play one batter later, but the run made it a 4-3 ballgame.
Baeder put up another run for the Cougs in the fifth, as he lead off the inning by reaching on an error and Bookie Gates capitalized on the mistake by sending Baeder home on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at four.
After Alwert gave up the four-spot to the Beavs in the second inning, he shut down the OSU offense shut out the Beavers in the next six innings while allowing one hit during that stretch. Alwert's eight and two-thirds innings of work saw him give up eight runs, but only one was earned as he also struck out two and walked two batters in a tough-luck loss.
The Cougars broke the tie in the top of the ninth, scoring three runs, starting with Bookie Gates' single to right field that plated Mike Knight and Adrian Thomas with one out. One batter later, with Stefan Bailie on third base, Alwert helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly that gave WSU a 7-4 lead going into the last half of the ninth.
WSU returns to Pullman next weekend to play the cross-state rival Washington Huskies in a three-game weekend series starting Friday at 6 p.m.
