LINCOLN, Neb. - The Washington State University men and women track and field team found several personal-bests during the second day's events at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational Indoor Track Meet in the Bob Devaney Center at the University of Nebraska.
Among the Cougar women, Tamara Diles (junior, Bellevue) finished third in the pole vault with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying height of 12-feet, 11 1/2 inches (3.95m), although she has already vaulted a better height of 13-7 1/4 this season.
Freshman Haley Paul (Phoenix) finished fourth in the mile with a time of 5 minutes, .78 seconds while teammates Karen DeMartini (RS-freshman, Reno) was sixth in a time of 5:00.90 and senior Molly Bull (Gig Harbor) was ninth in a time of 5:02.67. Anna Friedges (freshman, Dupont, Wash.) clocked in a PR of 2:16.31 for 14th in the 800m run after taking the lead and making a solid challenge in the race. Collier Lawrence (freshman, Reno) ran a PR time of 10:12.62 for 20th among 38 racers in the 3000m.
Diana Pickler (RS-soph., Sachse, Texas) followed up her Friday seventh place finish in the long jump with a sixth place showing in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.63 seconds.
In the men's events, WSU senior Paul Nicoletti (Snohomish) took fourth place in the pole vault with a season-best height of 16-6 3/4 (5.05m) and Tyson Byers (RS-sophomore, Spokane) cleared the same height but was awarded fifth place. Byers missed his final attempt at 17- 3/4 when his time expired.
A trio of WSU men reached PRs in the mile: Justin Ireland (RS-junior, Issaquah) eighth in 4:10.52, Chris Concha (sophomore, Reno) 14th in 4:14.88, and Phil Hinrichs (freshman, Pullman) was 19th in 4:19.14.
Darion Powell (junior, Kirkland) qualified to run in the semifinals of the 60m hurdles after clocking in with a prelim time 8.23, but he had a painful shin and pulled himself out of the competition.
John Cassleman (sophomore, Pullman) and Dione Cason (junior, Long Beach, Calif.) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 400m dash. They came back at the end of the meet to join Eric Nygard (junior, Wenatchee) and Robert Lee (junior, Madera, Calif.) in the 4x400m relay where the Cougs finished seventh with a time of 3:14.89.
"The men's relay was certainly was a nice way to end the meet," Head Coach Rick Sloan said. "There were some bright spots in this meet but we need to get back to work and get ready not only for the Boise meet next weekend but also start getting ready for the Mountain Pacific championships at the end of the month as well as the outdoor season."
At the McDonald's Collegiate Meet (Moscow) freshman thrower Jessica Zita placed third in both the shot put (PR 12.59m/41-3 3/4) and the discus (40.90m/134-2). Leif Kohler (junior, Makawao, Hawaii) won the men's 3000m race in a time of 9:10.71. Drew Ulrick (sophomore, Mead) finished third in the discus with a toss of 51.36m/168-6 while Mike Schramm (RS sophomore, Spokane) reached a discus PR of 46.35m/152-1.
