PULLMAN, Wash. - Oregon State pounded out 17 hits and received 11 walks from Washington State pitching as the Beavers defeated the Cougars 19-9 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Sunday.

"Oregon State played better defense and its bullpen was better than ours today," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "The only saving grace for us is we won the series."

Washington State (24-20, 5-10 Pac-10) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Jim Murphy's two-run double that raised his season-RBI total to a career-high 48.

Oregon State (21-18, 9-9 Pac-10) three times in the second to grab a 3-2 lead before each team scored six times in the third inning.

The Beavers took advantage of two walks, two hit by pitches and a wild pitch from the Cougars' staff to aid their six-run frame and push the lead to 9-2.

In the bottom of the third, Washington State answered with six runs after two outs. Paul Gran and Murphy walked and Jared Prince was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Alex Burg was hit by a pitch to force in a run and Michael Weber doubled in two runs to cut the deficit to 9-5. Weber finished the series 7-for-14 with 10 RBI. Greg Lagreid followed with his second home run of the season to bring the Cougars within a run at 9-8.

After the Beavers tallied twice in the fifth, Washington State loaded the bases with zero outs in the bottom of the inning, but managed only a sacrifice fly from Lagreid in the inning and trailed 11-9.

Oregon State put the game away with a five-run sixth inning and three more runs in the seventh inning. Mark Grbavac (4-1), the third Beavers' pitcher of the game, picked up the victory with four shutout innings. Cougar starter Chad Arnold (2-4) took the loss after giving up six runs in two and one-third innings.

Washington State plays its next nine games on the road beginning with a two-game series at BYU that begins, Tuesday at 6 p.m. Pacific.
