Final Stats

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona Wildcats took a page out of WSU's playbook, scoring three runs in the ninth inning to pull out an 8-7 win over WSU in a Pacific-10 Conference baseball game Saturday evening at Sancet Field.

A night earlier the Cougars did the same thing to Arizona, scoring three runs in the ninth to capture a 6-5 win.

Zach Fisher (1-2) suffered the loss for WSU (20-30 overall, 5-15 Pacific-10 Conference), surrendering all three Arizona runs in the ninth. Wildcat (30-21, 8-12) relief pitcher Chris Goodman (4-2) picked up the win.

Brandon Hundt started on the mound for WSU and held the host club scoreless for five innings and to one run through six. He left the game in the eighth after giving up eight hits and five runs. However, he was plagued by four Cougar errors that allowed Arizona to score a pair of unearned runs.

In the ninth inning with WSU leading 7-5, Arizona began its comeback with one out. Pat Reilly worked Fisher for a walk and Moises Duran promptly tripled him home, cutting WSU's lead to one run. Chris Cunningham then walked and was replaced at first by Kevin Sears. Brian Anderson then tied the game when he flew out to right field, allowing Duran to score from third.

Richard Mercado was then hit by a pitch, moving Sears to second. Then, with the count full, John Hardy singled to center, sending Sears home with the winning run.

WSU scored first when Derek Bruce walked to lead off the second inning and later came home on Wildcat shortstop Brad Hassey's throwing error.

In the fourth WSU moved ahead 2-0 on a double by Wes Falkenborg and Bruce's triple. The Wildcats then scored their first run in the sixth inning, taking advantage of a Cougar error and a passed ball.

The Cougars responded in the next innings, scoring five runs in the seventh to take a 7-1 lead. Falkenborg and Mike Andrusco each doubled home two runs, while Bookie Gates singled home a fifth run.

Arizona answered WSU's big inning by scoring three runs in the seventh, all on Reilly's home run to right field. The Wildcats then added an unearned run in the eighth, pulling to within two runs of WSU, 7-5, and setting the stage for their last-bat rally.

The two teams complete their three-game series Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest.
