Box Score

STANFORD, Calif. - Ross Humes took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and No. 28 Washington State belted three home runs to defeat No. 17 Stanford in a Pacific-10 Conference series opener, Friday night at Sunken Diamond.

Humes (2-0) pitched to one batter over the minimum through seven innings, hitting Sean Ratliff with one out in the fifth. He lost his no-hit bid when he yielded a one-out home run in the bottom of the eighth to Ratliff. The Federal Way, Wash., native finished with eight innings of three-hit ball, giving up two runs while striking out three and walking one.

"Ross was phenomenal," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "I've never seen a `no-no,' but in the back of my mind I thought I might tonight."

For three innings Humes was locked in a pitchers' duel with Stanford's Jeremy Bleich as the Cougar lefty was perfect while his Cardinal (10-7, 0-1 Pac-10) counterpart was working on a one-hit shutout.

However, Bleich was replaced in the fourth after suffering an undisclosed injury, and Washington State (16-7, 2-2 Pac-10) took advantage scoring three times in the fourth and adding four more in the fifth.

Paul Gran led off the fourth with a walk off Max Fearnow (1-1) and moved to second on a one-out walk to Jared Prince. Greg Lagreid followed with his first home run of the season to stake the Cougars to a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth, Gran homered off Alex Pracher, his fifth round-tripper off the season, with one out. Jim Murphy followed with a single and Prince homered over the left-center field wall to increase the Cougars' lead to 6-0. Danny Sandbrink came in to face Lagreid and surrendered a triple followed by a Michael Weber sacrifice fly and it was 7-0 WSU.

The Cougars added a Shea Vucinich sacrifice fly in the eighth, and a Lagreid sacrifice fly and Matt Fanelli RBI-single in the ninth. Stanford rounded out the scoring picking up two runs in its half of the ninth off WSU reliever Matt Argyropoulos.

The teams continue their three-game series at Sunken Diamond, Saturday at 1 p.m.
