CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Washington State (22-17, 11-6) third baseman Greg Mitchell was 2-for-4 with two home runs on the day as the Cougars swept a doubleheader from No. 24 Oregon State (22-11, 11-6) 6-4 and 10-6 Friday afternoon at Coleman Field.

With the two WSU wins and a 9-2 victory by Washington over Portland State, there is now a three way tie atop the Pac-10 North standings, with OSU, WSU, and UW all having 11-6 league records.

Mitchell, a senior from Maple Ridge, British Columbia, connected on a solo homer in the sixth inning of the first game to give the Cougs a 5-4 lead. In the nightcap, the left-handed swinger pinch-hit for catcher Jeff Scherer in the sixth inning and delivered a two-out three-run home run over the center field fence to give the Cougs a 9-6 advantage.

Spot starter Jason Grove (1-1) opened for the Cougs in the first game and pitched will in pressure situations. The lefty from Walla Walla went five innings while giving up four runs, two earned, on just two hits. He did walk eight, but successfully retired the Beavers twice when the bases were loaded.

Reggie Rivard and Aaron Cozzens both pitched in relief of Grove and helped preserve the Cougar win. Rivard pitched one and two-thirds innings and struck out four of the five batters he faced to pick up his third save of the '98 campaign.

Oregon State starter Chris Pine (4-3) pitched descent in his complete game outing. Pine allowed six runs to cross the plate while striking out seven. The hard throwing right hander gave up only seven hits, but five left Coleman Field for home runs. Left fielder Drew Hedges was 1-for-2 with a solo home run in the game.

A barrage of five home runs by the Cougars led the scoring attack in the first game. Mitchell, Justin Mentink, Steve Curran, and Ryan Smith all connected on solo home runs. Casey Kelley connected on his league-leading 20th home run, a two-run shot in the sixth. The first baseman from Ellensburg now only needs three more round trippers to tie the school record of 23. Kelley and Mitchell hit their home runs back-to-back off Pine. No Cougar had more than one hit.

In the nightcap the Cougs sent their ace, Wade Parrish (7-2) to the hill. The sophomore from Othello, Wash. struggled with his control for the first time this season, but managed to pitch well with runners on base to earn the victory. Parrish went six innings in his appearance while giving up six runs. He struck out five while walking seven.

Les McTavish entered in relief of Parrish in the seventh and followed the lead of the previous Cougar pitchers. The sophomore from Slave Lake, Alberta gave up five hits and walked three more, but managed to strand seven Beavers on base to pick up his first save of the year. McTavish did not give up a run in his outing and now has a 4.45 ERA.

Two-way player Joe Gerber went to the mound for the Beavers and took the no-decision. Gerber exited the game in the sixth with a 6-6 tie at his back. The Oregon State bullpen of Hal Ranstad (1-1), Jason Bronson, and Val Mencas combined to give up four runs on four WSU hits. Ranstad gave up the game winning runs while to pick up his first loss of the season.

Greg Conley was 3-for-4, while Jason Stranberg, Troy Schader, and Corrie Willkie all connected on home runs for the Beavers.

Scott Randall led the way for the Cougs with a 3-for-4 game, including his third home run of the season. Shawn Stevenson added his seventh home run of '98 to lead the game off in the first.

The Cougs jumped on the board early with three in the first. Stevenson led the game off with a home run over the center field fence. Ray Hattenburg pushed the lead to 3-0 with a two-run single with two-outs. A throwing error by OSU shortstop Brian Duerr helped keep the inning alive.

With the Cougs up 4-1 in the fourth, the Beavers threatened, but left the bases loaded for the third time of the day. The Beavers rallied for two runs in the fifth to close the WSU lead to 4-3 and then added three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. Willkie, Stranberg, and Schader went back-to-back-to-back with consecutive solo home runs to scatter Parrish from the game. The Beavers were their own worst enemy in this one, leaving 18 runners on base.

Washington State regained the lead with five runs in the bottom of the sixth and never looked back. Mitchell provided the big blow to the OSU ballclub, with his three-run pinch-hit home run. McTavish took the ball in the seventh and did not relinquish a run over the next three innings to secure the doubleheader sweep.

WSU now leads the season series 4-1 with a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday remaining. Todd Meldahl (4-4) will open in the seven inning game and Jammal Gaines (2-4) will start in the nightcap. The Cougs were the home team in the nine inning contest because the game was played as the make-up for the rain out that occurred March 23rd at Bailey Field.
