FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The Washington State University 800 freestyle relay team set a school record in the final event of the second day at the AT&T Short Course Nationals Friday.

Michaela Ahlin propelled the team during the first leg, finishing her 200 in 1:48.47, a personal best and NCAA "B" qualifying mark. Ahlin was followed by Emma Neely, Jennifer Dean and Talor Whitaker, who touched the wall with a final time of 7:23.05, setting a new school record and meeting the NCAA "B" time consideration.

In the first event of the day, the Cougar 200 medley relay team of Rugile Mileisyte, Shawna Keller, Ahlin and Whitaker qualified for the finals session in 12th (1:43.93). The team was the second to touch the wall during the consolation finals heat with a season-best time of 1:42.95, finishing 10th overall.

Ahlin was one of two Cougar swimmers to compete in an individual event during the finals session Friday night. The senior finished 11th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.89 seconds, marking her fastest time this season. Whitaker finished 35th in 56.36 seconds earlier in the day.

"We had a much better night session. Our 200 Medley relay stepped up and we had four solid splits at the same time," said WSU Head Coach Erica Quam. "Michaela had a great race in the 100 fly consolation heat and a much better finish into the wall than this morning."

The second WSU student-athlete to take part in the finals session was freshman Shelbi Luchini, who led the way for the Cougars in the 100 backstroke. Luchini took 28th in 56.37 seconds, good enough for fourth on the Cougar all-time list. The Rodeo, Calif., native was able to compete in the "C" final due to late scratches, where she finished 24th overall.

Competition will resume tomorrow with the preliminary session beginning at 9 a.m., followed by the finals session at 5 p.m.
