EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada-- Several Washington State University swimmers made an impact at the Speedo World Cup, Nov. 23-24. WSU athletes qualified for event finals six separate times and recorded 11 top-10 finishes, while competing against world-class swimmers from 26 different countries, including several world record holders and Olympic Medallists.

Cougar team captains Melissa Hubley and Rachel Dong both qualified for the finals of the 100-meter butterfly.

Hubley, a junior from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, placed fifth in the 100 fly with a time of 1:01.30, improving her 1:01.67 mark from the preliminary heat. She also grabbed fifth place in the 200-meter butterfly with a 2:15.66. Hubley narrowly missed qualifying for the finals of the 50-meter butterfly, placing ninth in 28.70 seconds in the prelims.

Dong finished only .27 seconds behind teammate Hubley to grab seventh place in the 100 fly finals. The sophomore from Paramount, Calif., also excelled by placing fourth in the 50-meter butterfly at 27.46 seconds, and fifth in the finals of the 50-meter breaststroke in 32.71 seconds. She also placed 12th in the prelims for the 50-meter freestyle in 26.46 seconds.

"Going into this weekend I was unsure of what to expect," Dong said. "I tried to build it up in my mind so that when I got there I wouldn't be overwhelmed, but I don't think there's much more you can do to prepare yourself for a meet like this. With 26 different countries represented, we were swimming amongst Olympians, which was amazing to watch and learn from. I had never swum internationally before, but it didn't really matter. If anything the meet made me realize that no matter what the competition is, it's still a swim meet and it's about racing fast. It was an awesome opportunity to represent WSU, because not only did we compete, but we definitely had a real resence at the meet. We qualified for finals several times and Andree-Anne even medalled in the 200 IM, so people were definitely aware of the Cougars, which was an awesome thing to be a part of."

Washington State sophomore Andree-Anne LeRoy also looked impressive, placing third in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:15.86. LeRoy, a native of Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, narrowly missed the finals in several other races, placing ninth in the 100-meter backstroke, 200-meter backstroke and 100-meter freestyle.

Cougar Katie Byrnes, a sophomore from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., competed in three events, placing 16th in the 50-meter backstroke (30.07 seconds), 17th in the 100 back (1:03.87), and 10th in the 200 back (2:15.54).
