PULLMAN, Wash. --- Despite losing nine starters from a year ago, Washington State's defense is still taking on many characteristics of the 2003 unit that led the country in takeaways, coming up with three sacks and two interceptions in Wednesday night's scrimmage at Martin Stadium. "I was pretty happy with the defense. They flew around. We still need a lot of work. We will definitely practice tomorrow," Head Coach Bill Doba said. Sophomore linebacker Brian Hall put things in motion for the Cougar defense, picking off a Josh Swogger pass inside his own 20-yard line. Junior Tyron Brackenridge also recorded an interception later in the session. Defensive ends Adam Braidwood, Mkristo Bruce, and Adam West each recorded one sack. Swogger led all quarterbacks with 66 passing yards, including a 10-yard scoring strike to junior receiver Trandon Harvey. Swogger connected with senior running back Chris Bruhn on a pair of swing passes totaling 30 yards on the opening drive. Pasadena City College transfer Jerome Harrison, participating in his first scrimmage as a Cougar, provided most of the spark for the offense, collecting 55 yards on 12 carries. Harrison proved to be a difficult target for the defense, picking up chunks of yardage after contact and slipping between would-be tacklers. Junior Tramaine Murray was the leading receiver, bringing in two balls for 48 yards. Freshman Michael Bumpus continued to impress, catching three passes around the line of scrimmage and producing 27 yards. The Cougars' next scrimmage is Saturday, August 21 at 3:30 p.m. STATISTICS
