PULLMAN, Wash. - Mike Price and his staff, already having greeted 29 new players Aug. 6 (Friday) with the official opening of Washington State University's fall football camp, will welcome 74 returning veterans today as the camp total pushes toward the allowable 105 prior to the start of school in two weeks.

The list of Cougar veterans reporting Tuesday includes 44 returning letterwinners, among them 17 starters. Offensively, WSU returns six starters, while nine on defense and both regular kickers also return.

WSU players will gather Wednesday for team and individual photos, then officially kick off their first practice Thursday at 9:00 a.m. Following three days of non-contact drills in the morning and afternoon, WSU's squad begins full scale workouts in pads Sunday with one afternoon workout.

GENERAL MIKE PRICE COMMENTS: "Marcus Williams (WR) and Collin Henderson (WR) could help us this year if we need both of them. Matt Kegel (QB) is really going to be good someday. We certainly didn't make a mistake in recruiting him. There is no question Deon Burnett (RB) will get a chance to play. Our tight ends are huge, the biggest group we have ever brought in. Jeremy Williams (DT) may not have run fast (in 40 timing Monday) but he is playing well. Billy Knotts (OL) is going to be one of our good offensive linemen. Marcus Trufant (DB) is playing very well for a freshman. He had to interceptions in Tuesday's morning practice. This recruiting class is as big and physical a group as any we have ever had. I don't see any disappointments. The class is everything they were cracked up to be by the media."

IN THE WEIGHT ROOM: JC transfer Marcus Williams and former Pullman High star Cole Sheridan shared the best times in the 40 yards among the 29 rookies...both were timed in 4.5 seconds (4.69 electronic)...Al Genatone and Deon Burnett clocked 4.6, while Matt Kegel and Collin Henderson were timed in 4.7...the rookies also tried their hand at the pro bench (bench pressing 250 pounds as many times as possible), with walk-ons Blake Klingeman and Mike Isaacson the leaders, each lifting 250 pounds 18 times...Ryan Calhoun had 16 lifts and JC transfer Anthony Adedipe 15, while Deon Burnett hit 12...Sheridan also was tops among the rookies who took part in the vertical jump competition...his VT was 34.5 inches...next in line were Marcus Williams 33.0, Marcus Trufant 31.0, Billy Knotts and Scott Lunde 30.5 each, and Al Genatone 30.0.

FREENY EXPECTED LATE: Junior college transfer Garviea Freeny, an offensive lineman out of Long Beach City College, is awaiting his AA degree following completion of work at both Pasadena CC (freshman) and Long Beach CC (sophomore)...a recent death in Freeny's family has also delayed his arrival.

ROSTER NOTES: Freshmen Kason Love (LB, Riverside, Calif.) and Faafetai Tupai (DL, Monterey, Calif.) have not yet met NCAA qualification standards...junior college transfer John Williams (DB, West Aurora, Ill.) will remain at Long Beach CC for an additional semester...Jerry Roquemore (WR, Gahanna, Ohio) is not academically eligible and will miss his senior year...two Cougars, seniors Eboni Wilson (DL, Los Angeles, Calif.) and Myron DeBose (TE, Pasadena, Calif.) have been forced to conclude their football careers because of injuries...Wilson has neck problems and DeBose a knee injury...freshman Sam Lightbody (OL, Huntington Beach, Calif.) will enroll at WSU in January...in addition, freshman Forest Lawson (DB/WR, Puyallup, Wash.) signed a professional baseball contract during the summer and will not be attending college.
