FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Freshman Jill Olson swam the fifth fastest school time in the 500-yard freestyle at the four-day Husky Invitational held in the King County Aquatic Center Friday.
The Seattle native placed 11th in the event with a time of 5 minutes, 2.91 seconds which is a junior national time cut. She also finished ninth in the 1,000 freestyle Thursday night with a 10:22.45 - the third fastest school time.
"It's nice to see the freshmen mature," WSU coach Rocco Aceto said. "She took a drop in her times and if we can continue to be third and fourth on the list throughout the season, we can do it at Pac-10s. It's exciting to see it develop."
In relay competition, the Cougars' top team finished fifth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.54) and fourth in the 400 medley relay (3:54.14). Washington State is among five collegiate women's swimming programs present at the meet. Rival Washington, Colorado State, Puget Sound and Central Washington make up the field along with 25 club teams from the West Coast.
The Cougars prepare for the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke events scheduled for Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m.
