SAN JOSE, Calif - - Washington State ended a seven-game losing streak by beating host San Jose State 11-9 Saturday at Municipal Stadium.

WSU starter Bryce Chamberlin (1-0) pitched six innings, allowing four runs on six hits to notch the win in his first start of the season. Brandon Hundt threw three innings, allowing five hits and five runs (one earned) to receive the save. Mike Dorsa allowed two runs on three hits in one inning of work in the losing effort.

The Cougars (1-7) had their best offensive output of the season, collecting 18 hits. Freshman right fielder Jay Miller led the way for WSU, going 4-for-6 with two RBI. Derek Bruce added three hits, while Bruce Jacobson, Wes Falkenborg and Zapper McGrath had two hits each. Brad Kilby and Anthony Contreras led the Spartans (5-5) with two hits each.

WSU got out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Miller led-off the game with a double to centerfield and was brought home on a Grant Richardson single. Robert Stahlke, who reached on a single, scored on a double play.

The Cougars pushed two more runs across in the top of the second. Bruce and Brandon Reddinger scored when McGrath reached on an error and was thrown out at second base, giving WSU a 4-0 lead.

The Spartans added two runs in the bottom of the second, cutting the Cougar lead to 4-2.

WSU responded by adding two more in the top of the fourth inning. Miller's RBI single brought home Bruce, who had doubled earlier in the inning. McGrath, who reached on a single earlier in the inning, scored on a double steal, as he stole home, while Miller took second.

SJSU scored single runs in the fifth and six innings to make it 6-4. WSU added another run in the top of the seventh, when Richardson's sacrifice fly to right field plated Miller.

The Cougars exploded for four runs in the top of the eighth. With two outs, McGrath bunted to score Justin Hart from third. McGrath then stole second and came home on Miller's single to centerfield. Jeff LaRue followed with a single to left field. LaRue and Miller each advanced a base on an error on the play. The pair scored on a Jacobson single, giving WSU an 11-4 lead.

The Spartans rallied in the bottom of the inning, adding two runs. SJSU threatened again the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs, before Hundt slammed the door shut on the Spartans' comeback.

The two teams conclude the series tomorrow at noon.
