CORVALLIS, Ore. - Cougar starting pitcher Justin Cayetano as the Washington State baseball team lost to Oregon State 14-5 Friday afternoon at Goss Stadium. With the loss, the Cougars dropped to 14-25 overall (5-8 in Pac-10) while the Beavers improved to 23-17 (6-7)
Washington State could not get anything started offensively off OSU starter Thad Johnson until the fifth inning. Johnson pitched eight-plus innings, struck out two and walked five earn the win and even his record at 5-5
After four shut out innings, the Cougars got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning as Tanner Kahler doubled-in Mike Knight and Brent Robertson with no outs and he later scored on an OSU error to cut the lead to 5-3.
Oregon State had better much better luck against Cayetano. A three-run home run from Brian Barden in the third stretched OSU's lead from two runs to five after three innings, and back-to-back homers by Andy Jarvis and Josh Howard highlighted the Beavers' seven-run fifth inning that effectively put the game away.
Oregon State sent two more across the plate in the sixth inning off reliever Tyson Thompson after Thompson relieved Cayetano in the fifth to give the Beavers a 14-3 lead. WSU rallied to get a run across the plate in the eighth and ninth innings, but the two runs were too little, too late as OSU reliever Craig Hays retired the side to end the ballgame.
The next game between the two schools will be played Saturday in Corvallis with the start scheduled for 1 p.m.
