What's Happening This Week: The Washington State women's golf team heads to the Lone Star state to tee up against familiar competitors in the Islander Spring Classic at Corpus Christi, Texas held at the 71-par Rockport Country Club...the two-day tournament will begin with 36 holes played Monday, Feb. 16, with the final 18 holes scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 17.
The Field: The seven team field includes Lamar, Northern Iowa, Sam Houston State, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, Texas State, Wichita State, and Washington State University.
Starting Off Right: After missing the fall season due to illness, Sophomore Ashleigh Gilhuly makes her season debut with the Cougs...Gilhuly is accompanied by junior Kim Welch, junior Jay-Lee Longbottom, redshirt freshman Heather O'Leary, and sophomore Stephanie Parsley...the Cougars are without the services of Maria and Anastasia Kostina, pending a final eligibility ruling by the NCAA...Welch and Longbottom were ranked as the nation's ninth best freshman duo in 2002...Welch enters a spring where she is poised to break the record for career top 25 finishes, currently held by Jennifer Dodd (24).
Head Coach Walt Williams, On The Island Invitational And Team:"This is a field that we are not used to seeing, but it should prove to be a very good tournament to open the spring season. In fact, I would be disappointed if we do not place in one of the top two spots."
Fall Highlights: The Cougars opened the fall season with two consecutive top 10 finishes...Welch garnered four consecutive top 25 finishes, two of which being in the top 10... Longbottom recorded her fifth career top 10 finish with a tie for fifth place at the Lady Vandal Invitational...Parsley earned her fourth career top 25 finish.
Leading the Pac: Junior Kim Welch was selected as a 2003-04 Preseason All-American by Golfweek magazine... ranked ninth on the Top 50 female players to watch list for the 2003-04 season by GolfWorld magazine in its Sept. 12 issue... finished fifth at the 2003 NCAA Championships with an 11-over total of 299...as a result of her finish at the NCAAs, Welch earned a National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American accolades, the first WSU player to garner such an honor... named a 2003 All-Pac-10 second team selection...ranked No. 40 by Golfstat in its 2003 final rankings... earned national College Player of Week honors by GolfWorld magazine for its March 21, 2003 issue...College Player of the Week honors by GolfWorld magazine for its April 5, 2002 issue...earned an All-Pac-10 honorable mention selection in 2002 to become the first freshman in school history to earn all-conference honors...rated as the nation's ninth best freshmen class in Golfstat's freshmen class impact ranking.
Head Cougars: Head coach Walt Williams is currently in his sixth season with the Cougars...in 2002, he led the women's team to a Top 10 finish at the NCAA West Regionals along with a finish in the Top 25 at the NCAA National Championship...three different golfers have been named All Pac-10 under the coaching of Williams...assistant coach Heather Holte is currently in her third season at WSU...Holte played golf at the University of Oregon, where she competed at the NCAA Regionals in 1995 and 1996...Holte is an amateur player at Oregon.
