PULLMAN, Wash. - Junior Elysse Van Leer scored a first half goal and No. 24 Washington State defeated Arizona 1-0 in Pacific-10 women's soccer at Lower Soccer Field, Friday.

Van Leer's game-winner, her third of the season came at 13:53. Freshman Lani Amack sent a long thru ball up the right side that Van Leer gathered before blasting a shot off an Arizona (9-10-0, 2-6-0 Pac-10) defender and into the net. With the assist, Amack became the fifth WSU (9-5-5, 3-3-2 Pac-10) freshman to earn a point this season.

"I got a good service from Lani," Van Leer said. "She put the ball in front of me and I was able to run onto it and get the shot on frame."

In the 39th minute, Arizona's Alex Davis sent a header toward the WSU net, but junior Jenny Christoph was there to clear the ball off the line and preserve the Cougars' advantage.

Washington State had a pair of chances to extend its lead in the second half. Junior Kiersten Dallstream fired a shot just outside the left post less than 30 seconds after intermission and Van Leer had the same result on an attempt in the 48th minute.

The Wildcats had one more good scoring opportunity in the 69th minute when Cougar sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Parlee made a sprawling save on a Jasmine Namdar shot and Mackenzie Mutz's shot on the rebound trickled wide left.

"We did the gameplan justice today because we knew Arizona's had threats up top and we handled that very well" WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. "Our back four performed magnificently."

With the victory Washington State improved to 61-0-1 all-time at home when leading at halftime, including a perfect 6-0-0 this season. Parlee made six saves and moved into eighth place on the WSU all-time list for shutouts with five.

The Cougars close out their regular season hosting Arizona State at 11 a.m., Sunday.
