SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- Cougar freshman Andrew Kimpel placed fourth in men's junior race at the USA Cross Country Championships Saturday at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane Valley, and qualified to compete at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships March 28, in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Under sunny skies with the temperature near 50-degrees at race time, Kimpel, a graduate of North Central High in Spokane, ran the 8000m course in a time of 24-minutes, 19 seconds. Trevor Dunbar, from the University of Portland, won the men's junior race in a time of 24:04. Walter Schafer (Greenwood Village, Colo.) finished second (24:10) and Andrew Colley (North Carolina State) finished third (24:16).

To compete in the Junior race a runner must be older than 16 and not turn 20 years old during the 2010 calendar year. The top six finishers from the USA Cross Country Championships will comprise the USA team to compete at the World Championship next month. Kimpel is redshirting the 2010 indoor season for the Washington State team so that he could train for the USA Cross Country Championship.

Cougar senior Mark Moeller, Spokane (Shadle Park High/SCC), finished 30th out of 91 competitors in the Men's Open 12k, running a time of 38:04.
