Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. - Sophomore Michael Weber collected two hits, including a two-run home run, and added a key sacrifice bunt in Washington State's 5-4 nonconference baseball victory over Creighton, Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

With the Cougars (2-1) down 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning, Weber blasted a 0-1 pitch over the left-centerfield wall for his first collegiate home run to tie the game 2-2.

"We had never seen (Creighton starter Mike Nihsen) so I took a fastball and I felt good looking for another one and I was able to put a good swing on it," Weber said.

Garry Kuykendall and Travis Coulter followed Weber's homer with singles to put runners at the corners with one out. John Desmarais hit into a fielder's choice to first base as Kuykendall was cut down trying to score. Senior Paul Gran followed with a single to right field and Coulter slid in just ahead of the tag at the plate to put the Cougars on top 3-2.

After Creighton (1-2) regained the lead at 4-3 with a single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, WSU rallied in the sixth inning.

Jim Murphy and Greg Lagreid led off with infield singles to put runners at first and second off losing pitcher Joe Bonfe (0-1). Weber followed with a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third with one out. After Kuykendall struck out and Coulter walked, Desmarais singled up the middle to tie the game at 4. Gran followed with an infield single to give the Cougars a 5-4 lead. Gran finished the weekend 6-for-9 with two doubles and seven RBI.

Michael Ratigan (1-0) entered the game with one out in the fifth and induced a double-play ground ball before recording a perfect sixth to pick up the victory. Ross Humes retired all four men he faced for his first save of the season and 14th of his career, second on the WSU all-time list.

"Since I've been here, Creighton is the best nonleague opponent we've played, so it was especially nice to get a series win over a good team like that," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said.

The Cougars travel to UNLV for a two-game series Tuesday and Wednesday before returning home to face Wright State in a 3:30 p.m. game Friday.
