SALT LAKE CITY - Lindsay Herbert scored 18 points, a dozen of which came from three-point range, to lead Utah to a 65-49 win over Washington State in the women's basketball opener for both schools, Saturday.

Herbert scored 11 of her points in the first half, including a buzzer beater that gave the Utes (1-0) a 29-28 halftime lead, one they never relinquished.

Junior Yvonne Volkman (Richland, Wash.) connected on a jumper with 12:20 left in the game to cut Utah's lead to 36-35. Volkman finished with a team-high 14 points.

Herbert answered with a three-pointer to ignite a 13-2 run that put Utah on top 49-37 at the 8:33 mark. The score was 53-38 before sophomore Romie De Anda (El Paso, Tex.) nailed a trey with 5:50 remaining. Until the basket, the Cougars (0-1) had gone 5:20 without a field goal.

De Anda finished with career highs in points (11) and rebounds (six).

The first half featured three ties and seven lead changes. Junior Victoria Harrod (Nepean, Ontario) recorded a career-high five assists and added four points, four rebounds and two steals in 13 minutes before being forced to leave the game with an injury late in the first half.

Washington State's next game is against Western Michigan at the Coors Classic in Boulder, Colo, Friday, November 26 at 5:30 p.m. MST.
