TUCSON, Ariz. - Coming off consecutive-NCAA postseason appearances, the Washington State University baseball team is ranked in the 2011 Collegiate Baseball preseason poll.

The Cougars are No. 31 and are one of seven Pacific-10 Conference teams appearing in the poll. It is the first time since 1991 (No. 24 Collegiate Baseball) Washington State has been nationally-ranked in the preseason.

Last year, the Cougars were 37-22, 15-12 Pac-10 and lost to Arkansas in the championship game of the Fayetteville (Ark.) Regional.

"The ranking validates the success we have had over the past couple of seasons," Washington State Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "That said there is plenty of work to do. It is important for our guys to realize that only eight teams make it to Omaha, so being No. 31 is not good enough."

The Cougars will play 22 of their 56 regular season games against teams in the poll and another 24 against schools receiving votes. Other Pac-10 schools ranked are No. 3 UCLA, No. 9 Oregon, No. 10 Stanford, No. 11 Arizona State, No. 22 Arizona and No. 33 California. Fresno State is No. 29 and hosts Washington State for four games in a nonconference series, March 17-20.

Here is a look at previous preseason rankings for the Cougars and where they finished.

1988-No. 19 Baseball America (52-14, won Pac-10 North, third in NCAA West I Regional) 1989-No. 19 Baseball America/No. 25 Collegiate Baseball (37-20, won Pac-10 North) 1991-No. 24 Collegiate Baseball (37-25, won Pac-10 North)

Washington State opens its 2011 campaign with a three-game series at Cal State Bakersfield, Feb. 18-20. The Cougars' home slate begins with a three-game set against UC Santa Barbara, Feb. 25-27.
