PULLMAN, Wash. -- Freshman Jason Grove belted two home runs and sophomore Steve Curran hit a grand slam home run as the Washington State Cougars opened the Pacific-10 Conference North baseball season with a 13-3 win over visiting Oregon State Saturday at Bailey Field.
Grove, who had four hits and drove home three runs, singled home WSU's go-ahead run in the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie, then added solo home runs in the sixth and eighth innings to help make a winner of Jamaal Gaines (2-3), who went the distance for WSU (9-10 overall, 1-0 in league). Gaines struck out six, walked just one and allowed five hits.
Chris Pine (2-2) worked the first five innings for OSU (11-6-1, 0-1), allowing seven hits and six runs. He struggled with his control, walking six. Val Mencas, Hal Ranstad and Don Stykel each threw one inning in relief of Pine.
Gaines shut down OSU after the first three innings. The Beavers picked up one run in the first inning and added a pair of unearned runs in the third, but after that, they had just two hits and two base runners. Gaines closed out the contest by retiring seven straight Beaver hitters and 13 of the last 14 batters he faced.
Meanwhile, WSU picked up single tallies in the second, third, fourth and fifth inning to forge a 4-3 lead. Then the roof caved in on Pine and the Beavers as WSU pushed across six runs on six hits in the sixth inning.
Shawn Stevenson singled home Steve Gleason with WSU's first run of the sixth after Gleason opened the inning with a triple. Mencas then took over for Pine and four batters and two outs later, he faced Curran, who had not gotten the ball out of the infield in three looks at Pine. The WSU designated hitter took Mencas' first offering and drilled it over the fence in right center to put WSU ahead 9-3. Grove then followed with his first home run to right field.
In the seventh Mitchell also had a chance at a grand slam home run, but instead delivered a two-run single that scored Randall and Stevenson to give WSU a 12-3 lead. Grove closed out the scoring with his second home run, this one to left field in the eighth inning.
OSU's first inning score came off the bat of catcher Ben Bertrand, who drilled a Gaines offering to the wall in left center. Bertrand's fifth home run of the year hit the top of the fence and bounced out of the park. In the third inning, Rob Colley singled home Matt Bailie with OSU's second run and Bertrand send home their final run with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Corrie Wilkie.
The two teams continue their four-game series with a noon doubleheader Sunday.
