BERKELEY, Calif. -- Washington State University's Ana Cabrera won the women's 5000m race Friday afternoon during the first day of the Brutus Hamilton Invitational Track & Field Meet at Edwards Stadium/Goldman Field at Berkeley.

Cabrera, a senior from Vancouver, Wash., ran a time of 17 minutes, 32.45 seconds, just three seconds slower than the Pac-10 qualifying time she ran at the Stanford Invite last month.

In the men's 5000m race, WSU's Ian Johnson (senior, Spokane, Wash.) finished third (14:55.86) and Andrew Jones (freshman, Gillette, Wyo.) was fourth (14:59.29).

Cougar men and women also ran 3000m steeplechase races Friday. In the men's steeple, Alex Grant (freshman, Bellingham, Wash.) finished fourth (9:33.66) in his inaugural race and Chris Concha (freshman, Reno, Nev.) placed sixth (9:51.39). In the women's race, Kayle Peterson (freshman, Port Orchard, Wash.) finished second in a time of 11:03.41.

The hammer throw was the only field event contested Friday. Tim Gehring (senior, Kettle Falls, Wash.) finished fourth with a throw of 197-feet, 6 inches (60.21m). In the women's hammer, Marie Muai (junior, Tacoma, Wash.) finished eighth with a season-best and NCAA Regional Qualifying throw of 174-6 (53.20m) and Sammy Jo Missel (junior, Mead, Wash.) was ninth (51.83m/170-0).

Several Washington State athletes also competed as unattached entrants at the Pelluer Invite Friday at Cheney.

In the men's races, Jon Manthey (junior, Federal Way, Wash.) finished second in the 800m race (1:55.01) and Chris Williams (freshman, Federal Way, Wash.) was 10th (2:02.80). Daniel Frederick (freshman, Bremerton, Wash.) ran 4:21.65 for 19th in the 1500m race while Tyler Fischback (freshman, Montesano, Wash.) finished seventh in the 400m hurdles (56.10). Matt Knoff (freshman, Pocatello, Idaho) finished second in the 5000m with a time of 15:30.08.

Two WSU women ran at Cheney: Natalie Smith (freshman, Bellingham, Wash.) won the 3000m steeplechase with a PR time of 11:53.64, and Hailey Young (sophomore, Kent, Wash.) finished second in the 1500m race (4:53.97).

Cougar throwers competing unattached at EWU included Brittany Bekins (freshman, Everett, Wash.) finished sixth in the javelin (36.52m/119-10). Mike Schramm (redshirt freshman, Spokane, Wash.) threw the shot put 14.50m/47-7 for sixth place. Keith Tyler (freshman redshirt, Union Gap, Wash.) threw the hammer a PR of 45.05m/147-10 for seventh place. In the men's javelin, Brett Ortgiesen (redshirt sophomore, Gig Harbor, Wash.) finished sixth (56.10m/184-1) while Kyle Mitchell (redshirt sophomore, Walla Walla, Wash.) finished seventh with a season-best throw of 53.00m/173-11.

The Brutus Hamilton Invitational Meet at Berkeley continues Saturday.
