LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Washington State volleyball team did not go away quietly Friday night as the No. 3 UCLA Bruins took a 30-17, 24-30, 30-21, 30-26, win over the Cougars at Pauley Pavilion.
UCLA remained undefeated at 17-0 overall and leading the Pac-10 at 4-0. WSU, with its four consecutive loss to a top-8 ranked team, is now 12-6 overall, 0-4 in conference action.
UCLA's Katie Carter had 16 kills and Nana Meriwether had 15 kills. Nellie Spicer had 61 assists and 13 digs while Colby Lyman also had 13 digs. Meriwether had seven blocks.
The Bruins dominated the first game after an 11-all tie, winning 30-17, hitting .559. WSU grabbed the momentum in game two, scoring 10 consecutive points and turned a two-point deficit at 18-20, into a 28-20 lead. UCLA's Dailey blocked an attack to put the Bruins back in the game at 28-21, but Rosin landed a kill to put the Cougs at game point. UCLA scored the next two points but on the fourth try at game point, Cougar junior Faleti landed a kill and WSU won the game 30-24.
The third game was knotted at 11 points but the Bruins went on to win 30-21.
WSU scored six straight points in the fourth to take a 13-11 lead. UCLA countered with four unanswered points but the Cougs stayed within one or two points of the No. 3 team in the nation until the final five points of the game. UCLA claimed the fourth game 30-25 and the match, 3-1.
"We played well again tonight at times and the team really did a nice job of reducing our errors and this is going to be a continued area of focus," WSU Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. "In order for us to be competitive at the very highest level, we need to really reduce our errors every game to a single-digit number. Tonight we did that except we had 10 errors in game two but the rest of the night we kept our errors down to a minimum. Unfortunately in game four, we didn't terminate the ball well enough but we were right there at the end."
Washington State returns home next week to host Oregon State and Oregon in Oct. 6 and 7 matches at Bohler Gym.
