HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Washington State Cougars captured their first win of the season with an 87-63 win over Long Beach State, Saturday in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown at the Stan Sheriff Center on the University of Hawai'i campus.
Freshman Sage Romberg led four Cougars who scored in double figures with 13 points. Fellow freshman Hana Potter scored 12, junior Jazmine Perkins added 11, and sophomore Carly Noyes added 10 to complete the quartet. Katie Madison added nine points of her own and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for WSU.
The Cougars never trailed, scoring the game's first four points and extending their lead to 16-8 nearly seven minutes into the game. Long Beach State fought back to tie the game at 16 at the 11:28 mark of the first half but four straight WSU points, all from Noyes, put the Cougars back to a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Up 33-24 with 4:58 left in the first half, WSU used a 13-0 run to extend its lead to 46-24 and went to halftime with a 48-30 lead. The Cougars opened the second half with five straight points to extend their lead back to over 20 at 53-30. Long Beach State would get no closer than 15 for the remainder of the game.
The Cougars shot 48 percent from the field and their 36 field goals were twice as many as Long Beach State made. In addition, the Cougars committed a season-low 15 turnovers and forced Long Beach State into 25 of its own.
WSU will wrap up the Rainbow Wahine Showdown vs. Gonzaga, Sunday. Tip is at 3:30 p.m. Pacific.
