CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State broke open a close game with a five-run sixth inning and defeated Washington State 8-2 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball, Saturday.

Sam Gaviglio (8-1) pitched seven and two-thirds innings for the Beavers (31-15, 13-10 Pac-10) to earn the victory. Redshirt-sophomore Chad Arnold (6-3) took the loss for the Cougars (27-22, 15-8 Pac-10).

"Sam Gaviglio was awesome," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We just have to find a way to win a Pac-10 series tomorrow."

WSU trailed 1-0 in the second inning when Greg Lagreid reached on an error to open the inning. He moved to second on a ground out and came home on a two-out single by redshirt-sophomore Jay Ponciano.

The Beavers took a 2-1 lead in the second inning and the Cougars tied the game in the fifth on a home run by sophomore Garry Kuykendall.

Oregon State tallied a run in the bottom of the fifth and put the game away with five runs off three WSU pitchers in the sixth.

The teams conclude their series, Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
