CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State broke open a close game with a five-run sixth inning and defeated Washington State 8-2 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball, Saturday.
Sam Gaviglio (8-1) pitched seven and two-thirds innings for the Beavers (31-15, 13-10 Pac-10) to earn the victory. Redshirt-sophomore Chad Arnold (6-3) took the loss for the Cougars (27-22, 15-8 Pac-10).
"Sam Gaviglio was awesome," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We just have to find a way to win a Pac-10 series tomorrow."
The Beavers took a 2-1 lead in the second inning and the Cougars tied the game in the fifth on a home run by sophomore Garry Kuykendall.
Oregon State tallied a run in the bottom of the fifth and put the game away with five runs off three WSU pitchers in the sixth.
The teams conclude their series, Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
Sophomore Garry Kuykendall hit the first home run of his career...pitcher Adam Conley moved into a tie for sixth place on the WSU freshman list with 19 appearances...senior Greg Lagreid was hit by a pitch for the 33rd time in his career to tie for fourth on the all-time Cougar list.
