Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Junior pitcher Andy Davidson gave up only one run and struck out six batters in six innings to lead Cal State Northridge to a 7-2 win over the Cougars at Matador Field Thursday afternoon.

The non-conference matchup opened coach Tim Mooney's fist season at WSU as well as the 106th year of Cougar baseball.

However, the Matadors scored four runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth to give them all the offense needed for the win.

In the third, Cal State Northridge sophomore Eric Verbryke sent two runners home s off Cougar pitcher Zach Fisher (Port Orchard, Wash.) with a double and Tim Arroyo drove in Verbryke and junior Robert Smith with two outs to give the Matadors a commanding 4-0 lead. Cal State Northridge continued their offensive prowess into the fourth, as Smith scored two runners and later scored himself, thanks to an Aaron McKenzie single.

Cougar freshman Kevin Spaulding (Anacortes, Wash.) relieved Fisher after the fourth inning and shut down the Matador bats, giving up only three hits and no runs. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late.

In the sixth inning, freshman Scott Stockwell (Los Altos, Calif.) drove in the Cougars' first run of the season scoring redshirt sophomore Wes Falkenborg (Redmond, Wash.). Falkenborg reached with a single and advanced to second on a balk and then took advantage of an Adrian Thomas grounder to short to advance to third.

Falkenborg doubled-in junior Bookie Gates (Seattle, Wash) in the seventh to score the Cougars' final run of the game. Gates walked, then advanced to second and third off singles by Justin Williams (Spokane, Wash.) and Stefan Bailie (Mesa, Wash.).

Starting sophomore pitcher Tyson Thompson, facing only his second batter of the game, was struck in the head by a Adam Nikolic line-drive early in the first inning. Thompson, the returning leader on the squad with 74.1 innings pitched last season, was taken to the hospital for medical precautions and returned to Matador Field under his own power.
