PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's swimming team came inches near defeating 20th-ranked Nevada at Gibb Pool with a final score of 99-95 Saturday.

Cougars Jill Olson, Kelley Miedema and Erin Eldridge captured individual events to close the scoring gap on the visiting Wolf Pack. Olson, a freshman from Seattle, won the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 10 minutes, 30.55 minutes. Miedema, a senior from Cape Town, South Africa, clocked in a 2:07.72 in the 200 backstroke. Eldridge, a senior from Kirkland, rolled to a victory in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:18.17.

"It was nice to have a lot of supporters at the meet. It makes a big difference in our swimming," Miedema said. "More than half of our team swam season bests and it's going to help us out when it comes time for Pac-10s."

Six pool records were drastically erased with Nevada All-American Limin Liu leading the way with three. Liu broke the 200 butterfly record with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:57.48 (previous record 2:05.91) and the 500 freestyle with a 4:57.86 (previous record 5:00.86). Nevada's Jin Lin Sun also broke the 50 freestyle record with a 23.23 and 100 freestyle with a 51.21. Both have competed for China in the World Championships and Summer Olympics.

"We were ready to race," Nevada coach Mike Shrader said. "(Rocco) has a very exciting and good team to watch here. We have not had a meet in two months and we were excited to come up to Pullman to race."

Eldridge rounded out the record breakers bettering her time at Gibb Pool in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:05.23. The Cougar All-American clocked in the time split on her way to her first place finish in the 200 event. Liu also turned in a time split of 50.50 seconds in the 100 butterfly during the 400 medley relay event. This marks another NCAA automatic time for the reigning national champion in the event.

"My team learned a lot from swimming against world-class competition today," WSU coach Rocco Aceto said. "Most of our kids swam in-season best times and we had one of our better meets."

WSU will next host Oregon State for two dual meets Feb. 4-5 at Gibb Pool. The Beavers and Cougars compete Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m.
