Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. - Arizona State scored eight runs in the ninth inning to come-from-behind for a 16-13 win over Washington State in a rubber game of a Pacific-10 Conference baseball series, Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

The game was played in front of 1,216 raising the weekend attendance to 5,313, the most people to witness a series at Bailey-Brayton Field since 1990.

Leading 13-8 after eight innings, the Cougars (19-15, 3-6 Pac-10) turned to Ross Humes (2-3) for the final three outs. However, Humes was touched for three home runs in the frame as the second-ranked Sun Devils (30-4, 6-3 Pac-10) snatched victory. Marcel Champagnie brought ASU within 13-11 on a three-run home run with one out. After a ground out and a walk, Ryan Sontag homered on a 0-2 pitch to tie the game 13-13. A single and a walk followed before Ike Davis, who also picked up the win in relief to improve to 4-0, hit his second home run of the game to give the Sun Devils the victory.

"It is a devastating loss," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We were in a positon we wanted to be in with our guy (Humes) we wanted on the mound and we were a strike away."

The game was full of twists and turns as both teams saw a five-run lead evaporate. Washington State chased ASU starter Stephen Sauer with three runs in the first as Paul Gran doubled in two and Jared Prince delivered a RBI-single.

The Sun Devils scored six in the third, five coming off Prince. Davis had the big hit in the inning with a grand slam. ASU added a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to increase its lead to 8-3.

The Cougars scored four in the fourth on RBI-doubles by Alex Burg and Scott Suttmeier and a two-out, two-run triple by Jim Murphy. Burg's first home run as a Cougar came in the sixth inning and tied the game 8-8.

WSU took the lead with a four-run seventh inning. The Cougars loaded the bases with one out, and then Greg Lagreid's sacrifice fly brought home Gran to put the WSU on top 9-8. After Burg walked, Shea Vucinich drilled a double into the left-centerfield gap to score three runs and increase the lead to 12-8. Gran led off the eighth with his seventh home run of the season pushing the Cougar advantage to five.

Washington State travels to Tucson, Ariz., for a three-game series at Arizona, April 18-20.
