Placing five golfers in the top 18 led by Dustin White's second place finish, the Washington State University men's golf team captured the Vandal Fall Classic title by one stroke over the University of Washington Tuesday at the University of Idaho Golf Course.

Entering the final round tied for the lead with Washington, the Cougars shot a final round 281 (-3) and finished the two-day, 54-hole event at 13-under (839). With a final round 282, the Huskies finished at 840 (-12) while Pac-10 rival California completed the tournament a distant third with a total of 851 (-1).

WSU was led by the consistent efforts from its quintet of players - White, Jon Reehoorn, Jeremy Taylor, Ryan Camp and Isaac Woods - as no one in the group shot a final round score higher than 72.

White, a junior from Pueblo West, Colo., shot a final round 68 to finish at eight-under par (205), two strokes behind Washington's Gordy Scutt, who captured individual title honors with a 10-under par score of 210.

The Cougars took advantage of the fact that they were playing the Huskies on their "home course" - the par-71 University of Idaho layout - which is only eight miles from the WSU campus.

"It is huge to beat a team like Washington," said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams. "We have never beaten them before and we had the opportunity to face them on our 'home course' for the first time.

"It shows just how big an advantage playing on your home course can be," added Williams.

Reehoorn, a senior from Burlington, Wash., completed the 54-hole event in a tie for sixth at three-under par (210). Taylor finished in a tie for 11th as the senior from West Richland, Wash., posted a one-under par total of 212. The sophomore duo of Camp (Spokane, Wash.) and Woods (Enumclaw, Wash.) completed the tournament in a tie for 16th and 18th place, respectively.

"Everyone contributed to this win," said Williams. "Dustin played incredibly, Jon and Jeremy were solid as usual and Ryan and Isaac posted top-20 finishes."

The Cougars won't have to wait long to play the Huskies again as the teams will meet at the Husky Invitational Oct. 1-2 in Bremerton, Wash.

The WSU women's team is competing at the NCAA Fall Preview at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn. Freshman Kim Welch leads the Cougars with a two round total of 155 (+11). The three-day tournament concludes Wednesday. For complete NCAA Preview results log onto golfstat.com
