PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior Erin Eldridge received the Most Outstanding Award for the fourth consecutive year at the 1999-2000 Cougar Swimming Team Awards Banquet held at the Hilltop Restaurant in Pullman Saturday, April 15.
The native of Kirkland, Wash. wraps up a storied four-year career at WSU. She is a three-time NCAA All-American, WSU Record Holder, Pac-10 Medalist and Olympic Trial Qualifier - to name just a few of her accomplishments as a Cougar. She is currently training for the August Olympic Trials in Indianapolis.
For a second time, senior Kelley Miedema was given the Coaches Award for all-around excellence in academics and athletics. The Cape Town, South Africa native also received the award in 1997-98. Miedema was recently honored on the Pac-10 Conference All-Academic First Team with a 3.42 grade-point average in zoology / pre-medicine.
"I am honored to receive the award," she said. "It's one of the nicest awards all-around. I was happy with my season this year and I think I finished on a high note (with this award)."
Senior Eli Schmied (Woodinville, Wash.) received the Scholastic Award for the second straight year. The zoology / pre-medicine major was also named to the Pac-10 All-Academic First Team with a 3.69 GPA. She was recently accepted into medical school.
Freshman Melissa Hubley (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada) was awarded the Most Improved Award. The Cougars' butterfly specialist made an NCAA consideration time and Olympic Trial Cut this past season.
"Everyone has improved so much this year," Hubley said. "We were all equal in improvement and to receive the award means a lot to me."
Her freshman teammate, Lindsay Henahan, rounded out the award recipients with the Strength and Conditioning Award. The Rochester, N.Y. native made tremendous progress throughout the season in the Varsity Weightroom.
