BERKELEY, Calif. -- For the second straight day the California Bears used outstanding relief pitching to hold off the visiting Washington State Cougars, scoring a 6-4 baseball win Sunday at Evans Diamond.

The Cougars (7-9) jumped to an early 3-0 lead after two innings and led 4-3 in the middle of the game, but California (10-11-1) battled back from each deficit and finally took the lead with a two-run outburst in the seventh inning.

Brad Steele (1-1) picked up the win for the Bears, blanking WSU over the final three innings. Bear starter Jon Shirley worked the first six inning and allowed six hits and four runs. Jamaal Gaines (1-3) started for WSU and took the loss before giving way to Les McTavish with one out in the seventh. McTavish allowed four hits but no runs in his inning and two-thirds of work.

The Cougars pounded out 10 hits off the two Bear pitchers, including five for extra bases. Jeff Scherer and Dusty Edler each hit home runs, while Shawn Stevenson had a double and Casey Kelley a double and a triple.

Boyd Robertson drove home WSU's first run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning that scored Stevenson after the Cougar shortstop opened the game with a double. In the second inning Edler hit his first home run of the year, a two-run blast to left field that scored Jason Grove.

After the Bears battled back to earn a 3-3 tie through four innings, WSU jumped on top in the fifth inning when Scherer led off the inning with his second home run of the season, this one over the fence in right center. The Bears answered WSU in the bottom half of the inning when Brian Oliver connected with a one-out home run.

In the seventh, Cal took the lead with two runs. Rob Meyer, who had three hits, singled home the go-ahead run and later in the inning Xavier Nady singled home an insurance run. Nady carried the big bat in Cal's win over WSU Saturday, clubbing a pair of home runs. He has six hits in the two games and has driven home five runs.

WSU and California will conclude their three-game series with a single contest Monday, 2:00 p.m., at Evans Diamond.
